Qantas Airways
Qantas Airways is Australia’s national airline and the largest in the country in
terms of fleet size, international operations, and global destinations.
Qantas Airways is the world’s third oldest airline, following KLM and
Avianca, established in November 1920. It launched its first international
passenger service in May 1935. The name Qantas is derived from “QANTAS,” an
abbreviation for its original title, “Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial
Services,” and is affectionately referred to as “The Flying Kangaroo.” Qantas
is one of the founding airlines of the Oneworld alliance.
The airline
operates out of and is based in Mascot, a suburb of Sydney, with Sydney Airport
serving as its primary hub. As of December 2024, Qantas serves 61 routes within
Australia and 34 international destinations spanning 23 countries in Africa,
the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania, including select seasonal services.
This does not include locations operated by its subsidiaries, with the
exception of QantasLink.
