Young children traveling without a parent or legal guardian are considered to be
Unaccompanied Minors. If you are allowing your child to fly alone as an
unaccompanied minor, be sure to take every necessary precaution to ensure his or
her safety.
The KLM Unaccompanied Minor service is required for kids aged 5 through 14
who are flying solo, or flying in a different cabin class than you as the parent
or responsible adult. For those aged 15 through 17, using this service is
optional.
Be sure to arrange the flight and Unaccompanied Minor service
for your child no later than 24 hours before departure. This service must be
booked together with the flight—it cannot be arranged separately—and is only
available through the KLM Customer Contact Centre or your travel agency.
When reserving the service, you’ll need to provide specific details about your
child, along with your contact information. Additionally, you’ll be asked to
supply the name and details of the person dropping your child off at departure,
and the authorized individual picking them up upon arrival. Please have all
necessary information on hand during booking. These details will be used to
complete the Handling Advice form, which your child will carry during the trip.
To officially authorize KLM to care for your child during the trip, you must
submit 4 completed and signed copies of the Handling Advice form at the airport
check-in desk. You can fill out the form online or print and complete it
manually. Be sure to sign each copy and bring the most recent version with you
to the airport.
When you check in online, you’ll receive a confirmation
of check-in, but not a boarding pass. The boarding pass will be issued at the
check-in desk.
A parent or legal guardian (18 years or older) must
accompany the child to the airport check-in at least 2.5 hours before takeoff.
The person bringing the child must present valid ID and remain at the airport
until the flight has departed.
Before and after the flight, KLM
representatives or their designated staff will escort your child to and from the
plane—even if there’s a delay. In flight, cabin crew will provide special
attention to your child. KLM will keep you updated by phone, email, or text
about any flight changes.
Transfers for unaccompanied minors are only
permitted on flights operated by KLM, Air France, and Delta Air Lines.
At
the destination, a KLM representative will personally hand over your child to
the individual you’ve authorized to collect them.
Fees
Regardless of your child’s age, the Unaccompanied Minor service costs the
same as an adult fare plus an additional service charge. Refer to the table
below for the one-way service surcharge. The charge is doubled for round-trip
bookings. For up to four children on the same booking reference, the fee is only
applied once—regardless of whether they are related.
These policies may differ, however, so you should check with KLM for a description of its rules and services and any additional
charges that may apply.
