About Kualanamu International Airport
Kualanamu International Airport (IATA: KNO, ICAO: WIMM) is located in
Deli Serdang, North Sumatera. This Airport is 39 km from Medan. This is the
second largest airport after Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in
Jakarta. The airport is located on the site of what was previously an oil
palm plantation of PT Perkebunan Nusantara II Tanjung Morawa In Beringin,
Deli Serdang, North Sumatera.
Development this airport is aimed to replace Polonia International Airport
there are 85 years. The airport is expected to become "Main Hub" that is the
new international transit center in Sumatera and the western part of
Indonesia.

City have limitation operational and difficult to be developed and the
facilities of Polonia International Airport is no longer able to accommodate
needs for air transport services tending to increase.
History About The Development Plans of Kualanamu International Airport
1992 : The Election study of new airport location for replacment Polonia
International Aiprort by The General Directorat of Air Transportation, where
for 6 (six) alternative location in North Sumatera province there are around
Kualanamu, Pantai Cermin, And Hamparan Perak ( each two location). By
Considering 6 (six) aspect as follows:
a. Landscaping Zone Plans
b. Economic Growth
c. Economic Viability, Technically, Operational, Environment, and Air
Transportation Business
d. Safety and Security Aviation
e. Integrated intra and inter modes
Selected 2 (two) alternative new airport location for replacing Polonia
International Airport that is Kualanamu area and Pantai Cermin (each one
location)
1994 : Research for Master Plan & Basic Design of new airport for replacing
Polonia International Airport by General Directorate Air Transportation
about 2 alternative location that is Kualanamu area and Pantai Cermin (each
one location)
1995 : The determination of new Airport in Kualanamu for replacing Polonia
International Airport in Transportation Minister Decree no 41/ 1995 ( 21
September 1995) and Refined later by Transportation Minister Decree no 66/
1996 (6 November 1996).
1996 : The Launch of process land acquisition of location the new airport
Kualanamu 1.365 Ha By PT Angkasa Pura II (Persero) as BUMN organizer public
airport.
1997 : Study review master plan & basic design landside facilities the new
airport Kualanamu by PT Angkasa Pura II (Persero)
The Development Plan of new airport Kualanamu with system “Ruislag”, in that
time consortium PT Lamtoro Gung Persada interest to become investor.
Related to the economic crisis in the new government regulation, the
development status of the new airport Kualanamu “Deferred Execution” through
Presidential Decree No 39/1997 on September 20, 1997; and then status
construction of new airport Kualanamu changed “Forwarded To Implementation”
through Presidential Decree No. 47/1997 on November 1, 1997.
1998 : a change in the status of the construction of new airport Kualanamu
"For Deferred Execution" through Presidential Decree No. 5/1998 on January
10, 1998;
2002 : Published KEPRES No 15/ 2002 about the recovation of Presidential
Decree No 39/ 1997 intructed to Ministry Concerned to assess the feasibility
of continuation suspended projects implantation (including the construction
of new airport Kualanamu) on March 22, 2002;
Furthermore, The Ministry Of Transportation c/q General Directorate of Civil
Aviation conduct reexamination based on level of needs, availability of
funds and criteria / special characteristics projects and declared
development of new airport in Kualanamu feasible to continue. And with the
approval of the Prsident on the Reform Era, Minister of Transportation
establishes new airport development in Kualanamu can continue with BLN/ LOAN
system, But Indonesian Government Policy in “Indonesia Bersatu” Era approved
funding from the state budget and sharing with PT Angkasa Pura II (Persero)
as Orgaizer public airport.
2003 : Preparation Detail Engineering Design Kualanamu Airport development
by Dirjen Air Transportation and PT Angkasa Pura II (Persero).
2006 : The Groundbreaking as the early commencement contruction of new
airport in Kualanamu by Vice President RI M. Yusuf kalla.
2007 : Determintion Master Plan of new airport Kualanamu with the Minister
of Transportation Regulation no: KM 30 / 2007 ( July 16, 2007) and
amandements with Minister of Transportation Regulation No : KM 16 / 2007
(November 29, 2007). Determinations KKOP (Flight Operation Safety Zone) new
airport Kualanamu wit Minister of Transportation Regulation No: KM 57/ 2007
(November 2, 2007).
2008 : Implementation of the new airport development in Kualanamu still
going on and expected to be completed on target airport operations that have
been set by The Government.
2013 : The Airport opened to Public On July 25, 2013.
2014 : Kualanamu International Airport was inaugurated officially by
President RI Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on March 27, 2014.
